KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival is the first and only LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) film festival in India to be held in a mainstream theater, and the first LGBTQ film festival in India to receive clearance from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Over the previous 6 editions, from 2010 to 2015, the festival has grown from strength to strength, attracting close to 8500 footfalls over the 4 1/2 days of the festival at two/three venues. The festival, every year, has screened from 110 films to 180 films that include shorts, documentaries, features - all centered around LGBTQ themes.

KASHISH is now considered one of Mumbai's prominent cultural event and is the biggest LGBTQ film festival in South Asia. KASHISH was voted as one of the top 5 coolest LGBTQ film festivals in the world by a worldwide poll conducted by MovieMaker Magazine in 2013.

KASHISH 2016 Festival Theme:

7 Shades of Love

The 7th edition of KASHISH will sing paeans to the "7 Shades of Love". Love in all its forms has been celebrated as the highest form of human emotions since the beginning of civilization - romantic love or Eros, friendship or the love between friends, the love between a parent and a child, the first stirrings of love between young lovers to the enduring love of committed partners, the love for humanity and the love and acceptance of one's true self. The 2016 festival theme embodies this spirit. It underlines that at the core of human relationships is the capacity to love each other and offer respect so that each person can live with equality and dignity.

Note: This is only the overall festival theme and all films need not coincide with the theme. The festival programs a broad range of films with diverse LGBTQ themes.

Theme: Towards Change
The Indian LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) landscape is undergoing a sea change since 2009 after reading down of Sec 377 by the Delhi High Court – with more openness from the society towards same-sex loving people. More youngsters are coming out to their families, coming out to friends and colleagues; they are living lives without masks. Pride parades are being held in all the big cities; there are cultural events like film festivals, book readings, panel discussions, photography competitions, etc; several organizations are being formed and But the Supreme Court verdict is being awaited, and the question on everyone’s lips is - has the change percolated to the smaller towns?
KASHISH 2013 will reflect this spirit of jubilation and will also question its overall impact within the LGBT communities and in the mainstream society with its theme – ‘Towards Change’.
