Wendell Rodricks picks KASHISH 2020 Poster Contest Winner

Wendell Rodricks picks KASHISH 2020 Poster Contest Winner

Desi designer in UK Joyston Moreira wins the Rs.25,000 contest

The much awaited results of the KASHISH 2020 International Poster design Contest is out! Top fashion designer Wendell Rodricks picked the winning design by UK based designer  Joyston Moreira, who will receive a cash award of Rs.25,000 sponsored by Wendell Rodricks as well as a trophy. The winning design will be the look of KASHISH 2020 and will feature in all its promotional materials.

Wendell Rodricks, Padma Shree awardee, Fashion Designer, Writer and Activist said on his choice of winner, “This year’s poster winner is not just a graphic celebration of who we truly are moving together forward, it is also a pean to colourful diversity. The fact that everyone is included shows that we need to look at the KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival as an all inclusive feast of cinematic ideals. The artist has also cleverly included visual delights that don’t register immediately. From the butterfly to the rippled coloured rainbow flag, this poster wins on all levels”.

The 11th edition of South Asia’s biggest LGBTQIA+ film festival will be held from May 20-24, 2020 at two prestigious theaters in Mumbai.

The winner Joyston Moreira said, "As a proud Indian gay man being able to showcase my skills towards helping the LGBTQ+ community’s shine is something that makes me happy. I came out when I was 19. At first, the news of me being gay was hard on my loved ones; but with time they are just starting to understand who I really am. This win makes me stronger and more courageous as I continue my battle towards freedom. For all the LGBTQ+ community out there don’t stop fighting for who you are! Seek support and join hands together for a better and a brighter future!"

The poster was unveiled on February 4, 2020 at the Best of KASHISH event, held as part of Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, by theatre personality Dolly Thakore, who is also an Advisory Board member of the festival.  She said, “I have seen KASHISH grow year after year and serve the cause of the LGBTQ community and helped them from coming out of the shadows. I wish them all the luck for the festivals eleventh edition.”

Call for film submissions for KASHISH 2020 is still open with an extended deadline till February 20, 2020.

KASHISH 2019 theme : ‘Moving Forward, Together!’

It’s already more than one and a half years since reading down of Sec 377, and the LGBTQ community in India is still celebrating. But apart from the legal change, have things changed at societal level, is there more acceptance? What about the marginalized sections within the LGBTQI+ spectrum? The festival theme of the 11th edition of KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival 2020 will focus on the steps needed to ‘Moving Forward, Together!’ to ensure equality & dignity for everyone.

Mumbai architect wins KASHISH 2017 poster contest, Wendell Rodricks picks winner

Poster portrays the theme of 8th edition of South Asia’s biggest LGBTQ film fest – ‘Diverse, One’

India’s top fashion designer Wendell Rodricks has picked the poster design submitted by Mumbai-based architect Benny Mathew as the winner of the KASHISH International Poster Contest 2017. The poster – that reflects the festival theme – ‘Diverse, One’ – will be the look of the KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival 2017. The 8th edition of South Asia’s biggest and India’s only mainstream LGBTQ film festival will be held in Mumbai from May 24-May 28, 2017. The festival venues are the city’s iconic art deco theatre Liberty Cinema and Alliance Francaise in South Mumbai.
"What is great about this poster is the face yet the facelessness. People see the LGBTQ community as a shadow of faces for the most part. But we do have a face and an increasingly prominent place in society. In our diverse contributions, we are one with society and the world. The poster wins because it has a plural narrative in both the visual form and written word. Above all the poster is striking, arresting and international in appeal. Congratulations to the winner,” said Wendell Rodricks. The poster will be the look of KASHISH 2017 and also wins for its designer Benny Matthew a cash prize of Rs 20,000 instituted by Wendell Rodricks.

Sridhar Rangayan, Festival Director of KASHISH MIQFF said that the poster was stunning. “Once again, Wendell Rodricks has picked a stunning winner. The design truly represents the diversity of the community with the various words of gender and sexual identities coming together to form one face. We are truly excited to unveil this poster that will be the face of KASHISH 2017,” said Sridhar Rangayan.
The winner of the poster contest Benny Mathew is a practicing architect and Head- Design & Concepts Head, with a Mumbai-based architectural firm. “I love design. Besides architecture, graphic design is something that I am passionate about and this poster contest just allowed me to explore my creativity. I was overwhelmed when I got to know that my design was selected out of numerous entries worldwide and especially when it was selected by Wendell Rodricks himself,” said Benny Mathew.
For the past five years KASHISH International Poster Design Contest has become a worldwide contest, receiving entries from several countries from both artists and professionals. KASHISH invited designers across the world to design the official festival poster and overall look for its 8th edition with the theme ‘Diverse, One’. The theme of KASHISH 2017 explores the diversity of the LGBTQ community. The diverse shades of the rainbow remind us that as people we are all different and we are all unique.

KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival

Founded in 2010, KASHISH MIQFF is held over 5 days at two venues. The festival this year will be held at Liberty Cinema and Alliance Francaise in South Mumbai. THEME of KASHISH 2017 : ‘Diverse, One’

The theme of KASHISH 2017 explores the diversity of the LGBTQ community. The diverse shades of the rainbow remind us that as people we are all different and we are all unique. In the fight for an equal society, basic human rights and against laws that criminalize and discriminate, it is our shared values that bring us together. We are strongest when we come together, when we embrace one another’s uniqueness and celebrate our differences. We are Diverse, We are One.

KASHISH 2016 Poster Unveiled

Renowned fashion designer Wendell Rodricks and popular actress Simone Singh unveiled the winning poster which will be the look of KASHISH 2016, and announced Ajoy Das as the winner by handing over a trophy and cash prize of RS 20,000.

For the past four years KASHISH International Poster Design Contest has become a celebrated worldwide contest, receiving entries from several countries. KASHISH invited designers across the world to design the official festival poster and overall look for its 7th edition with the theme ‘7 Shades of Love’. India’s top fashion designer Padma Shri awardee Wendell Rodricks selected Ajoy Das’ design as the final winner. This design will now be used on hoardings, banners, cinema slides, delegate cards, T-shirts and catalogue cover.

Wendell Rodricks said about the poster, “This year’s KASHISH poster design winner is a representation of the state of mind of the KASHISH Queer Film Festival 2016. Not only is the message calm & clear that we have arrived, but the thought process behind the film reel representation and the seven shades of love encircling us all, makes a compelling statement. The most poignant part of the design is the message that everyone is free to love who they wish to love. I wish the winner of the KASHISH Poster 2016, and the festival well deserved success in a year that may change LGBT rights for Indians in a path breaking way.”

Excited about winning the poster contest, Ajoy das, a graphic designer from Mumbai,  said, “It was a personal challenge to design a film festival poster for a very special community. It means a lot to win this prestigious award since the competition is of international level. It gives me great personal satisfaction to contribute to the cause of LGBT community.”

Talking about the festival theme, Sridhar Rangayan, Festival Director said, “Both Greek mythology and Sufism defines ‘7 Shades of Love’ to encompass all forms of love. Through the festival this year we want to emphasize and underline the message that love should transcend age, gender, caste, creed, ethnicity, social status, language, etc. Love is universal and love is cyclical – the more you give, the more you receive. The winning poster design amply illustrates this cyclicity and the diversity of love”.
